Salt Memory is a new body of photographic work by Yusuf Ahmed taken across the African continent and engaging members of its Diaspora, exploring how water holds memory — as archive, as vessel of cultural transmission, as site of creativity, hope, and the irreducible humanity of the continent and its people. Where land holds one kind of history, water holds another: one that moves, that carries, that returns.
Yusuf's practice traces the currents of globalization and their influence on memory, identity, and belonging, attuned always to the human face behind complex global issues. His work has been supported by the Sundance Institute, the Doris Duke Foundation, the Center for Asian American Media, and the Islamic Scholarship Fund, and has appeared in The Guardian, OkayAfrica, Musée Magazine, and The Art Newspaper. Salt Memory is his debut exhibition at Galerie36.
